Overview
You board your comfortable transportation and set off from the cruise port - ready to discover this beautiful island.
Begin your journey into the heart of Crete with a visit to Panagia Kera, also known as Kardiotissa, a historic monastery located around 50 km east of Agios Nikolaos. Dedicated to the Nativity of the Theotokos (Nativity of Mary), this important Cretan monastery has played a significant role in the island’s history and was used by the Greek Liberation Army during the Second World War.
Continue to the spectacular Lassithi Plateau, surrounded by rugged mountains and steeped in Greek mythology. Once home to around 10,000 windmills, the plateau was traditionally irrigated using these distinctive structures. Today, only around 24 remain, with modern pumping systems having gradually replaced them.
Enjoy a scenic drive through the plateau, passing traditional villages including Agios Georgios, Avrakontes and Kaminaki, before reaching Tzermiado. Here, take the opportunity to enjoy a traditional Cretan snack and sample some of the island’s characteristic flavours.
After your time in Tzermiado, sit back and relax as you enjoy the scenic return journey, taking in the beautiful landscapes of Crete along the way.
At the end of this tour, you will be returned back to your cruise ship in plenty of time for your cruise ships departure.
