Overview
You will be met at the port of Salerno by your driver to begin your private shore excursion.
When booking, please choose whether you would like to visit Pompeii or Herculaneum, as your tour will be tailored accordingly.
Your first stop is Mt. Vesuvius, the volcano whose catastrophic eruption on 24 August 79 A.D. buried the surrounding towns beneath volcanic ash and mud. Although best known for the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum, Vesuvius has erupted more than 30 times throughout its history.
Travel by vehicle to the highest accessible point before continuing on foot to the crater. The walk takes approximately 45 minutes along a steep uphill path to reach the summit at 1,281 metres above sea level. Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes are strongly recommended. At the top, you'll be rewarded with spectacular views across the Bay of Naples and the dramatic volcanic landscape.
If you choose Pompeii:
Continue to the remarkable archaeological site of Pompeii, where you'll meet your private, licensed local guide. Once home to nearly 20,000 inhabitants, the city was buried beneath around 30 feet of volcanic ash during the eruption of 79 A.D., preserving it in extraordinary detail. As you explore its remarkably intact streets, you'll discover ancient baths, elegant villas, theatres, temples, shops, and the gladiators' training grounds, gaining a fascinating insight into everyday life in the Roman Empire.
If you choose Herculaneum:
Alternatively, visit the ancient town of Herculaneum with your private, licensed local guide. Smaller and wealthier than Pompeii, Herculaneum was engulfed by a fast-moving flow of volcanic mud, resulting in exceptional preservation of its buildings, frescoes, mosaics, and wooden structures. Stroll through beautifully preserved villas with portico gardens, fountains, and bathhouses while learning about the town's history and the dramatic events of 79 A.D. Excavations began by chance in 1709 when workers digging a well uncovered part of the ancient theatre. Archaeologists later discovered hundreds of skeletons along the ancient shoreline, believed to be residents who sought refuge before being overcome by the intense heat and volcanic gases.
At the conclusion of your tour, you will be returned to the port of Salerno with ample time to board your cruise ship.
Please note: Herculaneum is closed on Wednesdays.

On the 1st of May, Labor day, Pompeii and Herculaneum is closed. Guests will have an extended tour of Naples and see Castel dell'Ovo.

Herculaneum is closed on a Wednesday.

Wheelchairs cannot be allowed on this excursion, as the sites are wheelchair inaccessible.
