Overview
Your guide welcomes you at your cruise pier, you will board your transportation and settle in for this wonderful half day tour!
New Zealand is known for its 'jaw dropping' beautiful landscape and the Bay of Islands is the 'crème de la crème' of all New Zealand has to offer. Turquoise waters surrounded by lush green landscape, this is truly one of the most scenic locations on the planet. Beyond the scenery, the Bay of Islands is a place of enormous historical significance, as this was the birthplace of European colonization in New Zealand.
Your first destination is likely to be a tour highlight, the magical Kawiti Glowworm Caves. A local Maori guide will lead your through underground caverns to admire the glow worms and discuss how the caves were found.
This 30-minute guided tour will follow a wooden boardwalk (with handrails) through a 700-meter limestone cave system. Once inside, you will see thousands of glow worms spread across the ceiling surrounded by breath taking stalactites and stalagmites. You’ll even get close enough to see the actual body of the glow worm and its stunning blue/green tail light, before you make the return bush walk through a natural corridor of karst rock formations and pristine rain forest.
After you explore the caves, it's a short drive to Kawakawa, home of the world famous "Hundertwasser Toilets". These restrooms are one of the few seen as an international works of art. They were designed by the expatriate Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser and features the use of recycled materials from the local community. You will also visit the recently opened Hundertwasser Cultural Center. Opened in 2020, the center offers an opportunity to enjoy the best of both Hundertwasser’s work and local Maori arts & crafts.
Before leaving Kawakawa, there is time to enjoy a delicious and complimentary fresh cream donut, arguably the best in the far North!!
Following your tasty treat, your final destination is the Opua Forest, home to Kauri trees which are over 1000 years old. Admire these giant trees, native to New Zealand and appreciate the nature before your return to the Wharf via the Waitangi lookout. Perfect for great photo opportunities particularly of your ship moored in the Bay.
