Overview

Originally designed by Christopher Columbus, Puerto Plata quickly became the main commercial port on the island and hasn't looked back. Its tumultuous past can still be seen in landmarks today and the area doesn't seem to be slowing down a bit, as luxurious hotels play host to visitors from all over the world.

This active and fun excursion takes you to not only the highest point of Puerto Plata but the highest point on the entire north coast of the Dominican Republic – the summit of Mount Isabela de Torres!

After meeting your host, you will travel in air-conditioned comfort through the bustling town of Puerto Plata, then through the village of San Marcos at the base of Mount Isabela. You will then ascend slowly passing small villages and farms. Once at the summit, you will notice the refreshing change in temperature and the spectacular views from your nearly 3000-feet altitude vantage point.

Your host will lead you to the Christ Statue which is a scaled replica of the Christ the Redeemer that overlooks Rio de Janeiro. You will enjoy a guided tour of the lovely botanical gardens and will have excellent photo opportunities before re-boarding for the scenic descent. You will make your way to Puerto Plata’s historic district where you will take a trip back in time to 1577 with a visit to Fort San Felipe and explore the grounds and learn of Puerto Plata’s pirate past. Here you will explore a remarkable Spanish fortress that might be hard for you to wrap your head around. This location was built to protect Puerto Plata from pirates and is perfectly located on a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The walls never saw much action and on various occasions served as a prison.

Then it's on to famous Umbrella Street. Umbrella Street with its colorful shops and umbrellas overhead, bustling activity and array of shops including a chocolatier, Dominican organic coffee, cigars and quaint boutiques make for great photo opportunities. After a stroll along Umbrella Street you will come to Paseo de Dona Blanca (Pink Street) then Parque Independencia (Central Park). Once at Central Park, your host will share information regarding the Dominican Republic’s fight for independence, the restoration period and the country’s heroes of that period. You will have the opportunity to enter the cathedral in Central Park before enjoying a bit of free-time to take photos or step into a shop before returning to your port.

Bottled water and fresh fruit is provided and our signature rum punch is served throughout.
