Overview
We start the tour from the Puerto Limón Cruise Dock in route to the beautiful Cahuita National Park community. After a pleasant 45-minute bus ride through the beautiful Costa Rican Caribbean Coast line enjoying the incredible scenery along the way.
Arriving at Cacao Trail Tayku, discover a place where we will have the opportunity to learn everything about the wonderful cacao fruit and how it is transformed into one of the most desired products around the world: Chocolate. The property is managed by a local family with more than 100 years of chocolate tradition, you will be immersed into the education of it's history and how it has managed to survive and thrive throughout time. Accompanied by your expert local guide, visit the cocoa plantations to learn about the plant, the cultivation techniques, its fruits, harvest, and processing of the seeds until we reach the final product. During your exploration of this respected institution, you will have the chance to taste a fresh cocoa bean and be delighted in its sweet taste. You will be amazed how different it is before being processed.
An opportunity to visit the Cocoa Museum, which has been created and curated by the family. Over time collecting artifacts, machinery, instruments and other important tools to make our beloved treat. Here it is also where you have the opportunity to make your own chocolate, guided by the expert indigenous women, they will teach you the process using traditional methods and using various natural ingredients. Ingredients you can pronounce and recognize, as this is the real deal. You will see things such as sea salt, vanilla, nutmeg, black pepper, hot chili and other favorites. And BEST OF ALL, you will get to enjoy a tasting of all different varieties.
Visit a traditional conical ranch of the Bri Bri and Cabecar Indians. The U SULE was used by the Shamans for cures, ceremonies and other communal acts. The ranch has opportunities to learn about medicinal plants and how they were used by Shamans for their community.
Continuing the exploration, you walk the trails of the CACAO TRAIL TAYKU, a good chance to spot poison frogs, giant ants, spiders, and scorpions, as well as howler monkeys, iguanas, sloths, armadillos and other native species that can be seen quite easily in the top of the trees.
At the Organic Banana Farm, you will learn the traditional methods of organic cultivation. You will take a step inside the Historical Monument that celebrates the old Punta Riel train station, where the route of the traditional “Burro Carril” ended, that train that transported cocoa and banana bunches.
At the end of this wonderful cultural experience, you will continue for more wildlife opportunities to the Tortuguero Canal for a leisurely boat ride. Keep an eye out along this ecosystem, where many wildlife species call home, including sloths, aquatic birds and with some good luck, monkeys!
Return to the pier and look at all the incredible photos you captured on a fantastic ecological and cultural experience!
