Overview

Each year, humpback whales undertake an incredible migration from the icy waters of Antarctica to the warm lagoons of French Polynesia. They arrive to breed, give birth, and nurture their calves before returning south once the young whales are strong enough to make the journey. The peak whale season runs from August through early November, offering one of the most spectacular wildlife experiences in French Polynesia.

Join our experienced and certified guide aboard our comfortable boat to discover these magnificent marine mammals in their natural habitat. During the excursion, you may encounter adult whales, mothers with calves, or witness a variety of natural behaviors such as resting, socializing, traveling, or preparing for their return migration. Throughout the tour, your guide will share fascinating insights into the biology, behavior, and conservation of humpback whales.

French Polynesia has been a Marine Mammal Sanctuary since 1986, when whale hunting was permanently banned. Since 2002, whale watching and encounters with marine mammals have been strictly regulated and require special authorization. We are fully licensed to operate these excursions and are committed to following all regulations to ensure every encounter is respectful, responsible, and has minimal impact on the whales and their environment.

When conditions permit, this excursion offers the rare opportunity to enter the water and observe humpback whales in their natural habitat. However, in-water encounters can never be guaranteed. Access to the water depends entirely on the whales' behavior, sea conditions, and safety considerations on the day of the tour. The captain and guide will always make the final decision, prioritizing both guest safety and the well-being of the whales.

This excursion is sold as a whale encounter experience with the possibility of entering the water, not as a guaranteed swimming experience. Whale sightings and water entries cannot be guaranteed, as marine wildlife behavior is unpredictable and conditions may affect the experience. On some departures, guests may share the
vessel with other participants who have booked a separate experience; however, all guests will participate in the same whale search and observation activity from the boat.

  • excluded Entering the water is not mandatory and depends on the whale’s behavior and conditions on the day of the tour. However, participants who wish to enter the water to observe the whales must be able to swim at least 200 meters at an average pace and be confident swimmers
