Overview
Your visit to Quito, if possible, should cover 2 important parts of this area of the world.
Start your walking city tour in Quito’s old town where the country’s colonial history blends with cultural diversity. Stroll along the narrow streets until you reach the Independence Square that includes important sites such as the archbishop’s palace, the Cathedral, and the municipal palace. On your way to the San Francisco Square, visit “La Compañia” church, one of the most important Spanish Baroque works in Latin America. Appreciate its rich interiors and sculptured façade dating back to the 18th century. Afterwards, step inside the San Francisco Church to see the temple, a series of chapels, and the convent.
The second, and main attraction of Quito is its location near the equator. Just short of one hour north of the city center you will find yourself at the Equatorial Line Monument, called "Middle of the World". This is a rare experience as you are able to stand in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres simultaneously. The Equatorial Monument, which is the focal point of the park, marks the spot where an 18th century French scientific expedition established the exact position of the equator.
Simultaneously stand in the northern and southern hemispheres! You can only do this at the Middle of the World Monument. During the 18th century, Charles Marie de la Condamine’s scientific expedition marked this exact spot and established the Equator’s position. Today, a colonial town, restaurants, gift shops, and a post office surround the monument. Then, at the Ethnographical Museum, learn about Ecuador’s different cultures from the Amazon, the highlands, and the coast.
