Overview
This is a small group tour with a maximum of 18 passengers so it is advisable to reserve early due to limited availability.
The tour will commence with a city drive through the town of Cochin taking you to the famous area of Fort Kochi, the first stop will be Dhobi Khana, one of the oldest open-air laundries in India. Here we will stop and learn about the workers and how the open-air laundry works, see the many washing lines and how they order the clothes, maybe get a chance to sample the ironing?
After the Dhobi Khana we take a visit to the Dutch Palace (closed on Friday). It was built by the Portuguese and presented to the Raja of Cochin in 1555. Though built by the Portuguese, it is popularly known as the Dutch Palace, as the Dutch renovated it during their brief reign here. The glory of the Palace lies in the murals which are in the traditions of Hindu Temple Art.
Your tour will continue with a visit to the Jewish synagogue (closed on Friday noon and Saturday). Built in 1568 A.D, it includes The Great Scrolls of Old Testament and a number of copper plates inscribed in the Hebrew Script and are still preserved in the Synagogue. This Jewish Synagogue in Kochi stands out as a testimony for the communal harmony.
The next stop on your tour will be a visit to St Francis Church. Built by the Portuguese in 1510 A.D, it is believed to be the oldest European Church built in India, there are still the old Punka Wallah's inside (old manual fans). Vasco-da-Gama was buried here, and fourteen years later, his mortal remains were taken to Portugal. If visitors wish to enter the church, they are allowed only by barefoot (shoes can be left within the entrance of the church).
Continuing with the tour, your guide will take you along the sea front where you will have the opportunity to see the famous wooden Chinese fishing nets at the entrance to the harbor, and the mechanical method of catching fish by local fishermen in Fort Kochi. Your guide will be on hand to explain how the fishing nets work, on average how much fish is caught each day and where the fish are sold, which is on the seafront by auction each day.
At the end of the tour you will have the opportunity to souvenir shop, the Jewish street is known for spices, oil fragrances and souvenirs (the majority of stores will take USD - US dollar currency).
At the end of your tour you will be returned to the port in plenty of time for your ship's departure.
