Cruising Hawaii: what to expect

Hawaii is unlike any other cruise destination. Each island has its own geological personality — the active lava flows of the Big Island, the dramatic sea cliffs of Molokai, the lush Hana Highway winding along Maui's north shore — and a single Hawaiian cruise can feel like five completely different destinations compressed into one unforgettable voyage.

Venture Ashore's Hawaii shore excursions are curated to match each island's character: a small-group helicopter flight over Kilauea's caldera on the Big Island, a snorkel charter in the calm waters off Maui, or a guided hike into Kauai's Na Pali Coast valleys. Every cruise excursion is led by vetted local guides with deep knowledge of Hawaiian culture, ecology, and history.

Our Hawaii cruise tours include pier transfers, are priced up to 50% below ship rates, and come fully protected by our Back to Ship Guarantee and Don't Port, Don't Pay promise.

When to sail

The best time to cruise Hawaii

Hawaii's cruise season runs May through September, with distinct advantages in each month. Here's what to expect and when to book.

April – May

Spring in Hawaii is ideal for cruising — warm but not scorching, less crowded than peak winter, and with excellent whale-watching in early April before the humpbacks migrate back to Alaska. Snorkelling conditions are excellent across all islands, and the shoulder-season pricing makes this one of the best value windows of the Hawaii cruise year.

June – August

Hawaii's summer season brings the longest days and warmest water temperatures, making it ideal for outdoor cruise excursions — hiking, kayaking, helicopter tours, and beach days. Trade winds keep conditions pleasant. Demand is at its highest; book shore excursions and helicopter flights as early as possible.

December – March

Prime humpback whale season in Hawaii, with the largest concentrations of whales gathering in the warm, shallow waters off Maui's Ma'alaea Bay from December through April. The Big Island's volcanic activity is often at its most visible in winter, and Christmas and New Year itineraries make this the most popular Hawaii cruise season of the year.

Book Early

Most travelers book their Hawaii excursions 2–4 months before sailing.

Availability is widest that far out, and narrows first on the most popular small-group departures — helicopter glacier landings, whale watching and dog sled camp visits. Sailing sooner? Plenty of tours are still open, and the surest way to know is to check your own sailing date.

Iconic Hawaii

Signature Hawaii experiences

A short list of the experiences that make a cruise here unforgettable — most available across multiple ports.

Kilauea Volcano Helicopter Flight (Hilo, Big Island)

A helicopter flight over Kilauea's active summit caldera and the lava fields of the East Rift Zone is the undisputed highlight of any Big Island port call. Venture Ashore partners with FAA-certified operators running both doors-on and doors-off options in groups of four to six — the most intimate volcano experience available from a cruise ship.

Road to Hana Scenic Drive (Maui)

The Hana Highway is one of America's great scenic drives — 617 curves, 59 bridges, and a tropical rainforest that opens onto the black-sand beaches and sacred pools of Haleakalā National Park. Venture Ashore's guided small-group excursion navigates the route safely and includes a traditional Hawaiian plate lunch at a roadside stand.

Kona Coffee Country Tour & Kealakekua Bay Snorkel

The Kona Coast of the Big Island is home to the world's most celebrated coffee-growing region — volcanic hillside farms producing the only commercially grown coffee in the United States. Venture Ashore's Kona shore excursion combines a guided coffee farm visit and cupping session with an afternoon snorkel at Kealakekua Bay — a protected marine sanctuary and one of the finest coral reef snorkel sites in all of Hawaii. A perfect blend of culture and nature for a Kona port day.

Pearl Harbor & USS Arizona Memorial (Honolulu)

For cruises departing from or calling at Honolulu, a thoughtfully guided Pearl Harbor half-day — covering the USS Arizona Memorial, the Battleship Missouri, and the Pacific Aviation Museum — is the most historically significant shore excursion in Hawaii. Our small groups allow for genuine reflection time, not a rushed tick-box visit.

Humpback Whale Watch Catamaran (Maui, Dec–Apr)

Maui's Ma'alaea Bay holds one of the highest concentrations of North Pacific humpback whales from December through April. Venture Ashore's whale-watching charters operate in certified small vessels with a NOAA-compliant marine naturalist on board — a very different experience from the large sightseeing catamarans that dominate the harbour.

Hawaii cruise & shore excursion FAQs

A private shore excursion means exactly that — no other guests join your group. It is just you, your travel companions, and a licensed local expert guide, in a vehicle sized to your party. The itinerary is built around your interests before the day begins: you can linger at the sites that matter to you, skip the ones that don't, add a stop for lunch at a restaurant your guide recommends, or simply change direction if the morning takes you somewhere unexpected. Private tours are a fundamentally different experience from even the best small-group excursion — and in Europe, where history is dense, ports are complex, and every traveller has different priorities, the flexibility makes an enormous difference to the quality of the day.

Private shore excursions cost more for two reasons: demand and exclusivity. In Europe's most popular cruise ports — Santorini, Dubrovnik, Lisbon, Rome — private guides with deep expertise and strong English are genuinely in high demand throughout the season, and their availability is limited. The second reason is that private tours are simply not something cruise lines offer — ship excursions are always shared, always large-group, and always on a fixed programme. If you want a guide who knows exactly who you are and what you want to see before you step off the ship, a private tour is the only way to get it. Venture Ashore's private European tours start from as little as $69 per person and are priced significantly below what independent local operators charge at the pier.

Yes — customisation is the whole point. When you book a private tour with Venture Ashore, you can tell us what you care about most — a specific monument, a restaurant recommendation, avoiding crowds, accessible routes, or a particular neighbourhood — and we'll build the day around it. In Santorini, that might mean prioritising the Akrotiri Bronze Age excavation over the main tourist circuit. In Lisbon, it might mean more time in Belém and less in the Alfama. In Dubrovnik, it might mean timing the city walls walk to hit the morning light before the cruise ship crowd arrives. Your guide is yours for the day, and the itinerary is yours to shape. Contact our team before your sailing and we'll make sure the private tour fits your specific interests.

Hawaii's top cruise excursions include a Kilauea volcano helicopter flight from Hilo on the Big Island, the Road to Hana scenic drive on Maui, a Na Pali Coast snorkel charter from Kauai, the Pearl Harbor and USS Arizona Memorial from Honolulu, and a humpback whale-watching catamaran from Maui (December–April). Venture Ashore curates all these as small-group experiences.

Hawaii cruises run year-round. December through March is prime whale-watching season — humpbacks gather in massive numbers off Maui. April through May is excellent value with warm water and fewer crowds. June through August offers the longest days and best outdoor excursion conditions. Each island has consistent weather year-round, making Hawaii one of the most reliable cruise destinations.

Volcanic activity on the Big Island varies — check current Kilauea activity levels before your cruise. When active, a helicopter flight over the summit caldera and East Rift Zone is the most spectacular way to see it. Venture Ashore's Big Island helicopter excursion uses FAA-certified operators and runs in groups of four to six — doors-on and doors-off options available.

Yes — Maui's Hana Highway is one of Venture Ashore's most popular Hawaii cruise excursions. The 617-curve coastal drive to Hana and the 'Ohe'o Gulch pools of Haleakalā National Park is best done with a guided small-group tour that handles the driving, points out the highlights, and returns you to the Kahului cruise port on schedule.

Honolulu's cruise port is Pier 2 in downtown Honolulu — within easy reach of Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head crater, the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, and the Bishop Museum of Hawaiian culture. Venture Ashore's Pearl Harbor excursion is the most historically significant half-day available from Honolulu, run respectfully and in small groups.

Many of our Hawaii shore excursions are accessible for travellers with limited mobility. The Pearl Harbor memorial tour, the Road to Hana scenic drive, and the humpback whale catamaran are all comfortable for most fitness levels. Helicopter flights require the ability to board a small aircraft. Active options like Na Pali kayaking and hiking are clearly noted in each listing.

Yes — our Hawaii shore excursions are priced up to 50% less than equivalent tours sold on your cruise ship. You get smaller groups, expert local guides with genuine island knowledge, direct pier transfers, and our Back to Ship Guarantee. The price difference on a Hawaii cruise can be significant — particularly for helicopter and snorkel charters.
