Overview
Step into the heart of Istanbul's rich cultural and architectural history on this guided tour through some of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Perfectly timed for cruise passengers or visitors on a tight schedule, this experience offers a deep dive into the city’s Byzantine and Ottoman past—plus plenty of color, shopping, and storytelling.
Your adventure begins with a short ride to Hippodrome Square, also known as Sultanahmet Meydani. Once the vibrant social center of Constantinople, the Hippodrome hosted chariot races, gladiator battles, and imperial ceremonies. Standing proudly here is the Obelisk of Theodosius, the oldest monument in the city.
From the square, enjoy a short walk to the architectural marvel of Hagia Sophia. Originally constructed in just under six years as a Greek Orthodox cathedral, this masterpiece later became a mosque after the Ottoman conquest of 1453. Today, it stands as a stunning symbol of peace between two faiths, with both Christian mosaics and Islamic calligraphy coexisting under its magnificent dome.
Next, visit the nearby Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmet Mosque), one of the most iconic structures in the world. Built in 1616 to rival Hagia Sophia, its nickname comes from the mesmerizing blue tiles that decorate its interior. A unique story surrounds its six minarets, originally controversial, but now part of its grand legacy.
After exploring Istanbul’s religious heart, head to the Grand Bazaar, one of the world’s oldest and largest covered markets. Dating back to 1461, this bustling labyrinth of over 4,000 shops across 60 streets offers everything from gold and textiles to ceramics and spices. Haggling is encouraged—so don’t be shy!
Your final stop is the aromatic Spice Bazaar, built in 1664. Follow your nose to stalls brimming with vibrant spices like sumac, pul biber, and saffron. Enjoy free time here to shop, taste, and soak in the atmosphere before rejoining your guide and returning to the cruise port.
