Why people love this tour
Many visitors enjoy learning about Iceland’s history and folklore while visiting Goðafoss and the lava fields of Dimmuborgir. The steaming mud pools and fumaroles at Hverir are often noted as a memorable contrast to the surrounding landscapes.
Overview
Your drive from Akureyri takes about 1.5 hours and during that time you will hear and learn why this area has been an inspiration to so many fantasies. You will be entertained on your way to the Lake, as one of your stops is the spectacular Godafoss Waterfall, claiming to be the most spectacular in Iceland and there is plenty of competition in Iceland for that! Here the water falls from a height of 40 feet over a width of almost 100 feet. The rock formations in and around the waterfall make it one of the greatest natural wonders in Iceland.
Godafoss is closely connected to one of the most important events in Icelandic history, the conversion to Christianity from heathendom or “the old custom” in the year 1000. It is breathtaking and a must-see.
You will continue on to Lake Mývatn, seeing the mysterious Dimmuborgir, also called Dark Cities, first. Dimmuborgir is a large area of unusually shaped lava fields east of Mývatn. The Dimmuborgir area is composed of various volcanic caves and rock formations, reminiscent of an ancient collapsed citadel. The dramatic structures are one of Iceland's most popular natural tourist attractions and you will enjoy hearing of the sagas and tales that accompany the lava-pillars.
Before returning to the cruise pier, you will stop at the geothermal area of Hverir. This area is rich with boiling mud pools, steaming fumaroles and sulfur pits.
