Overview
Langkawi Island dominates this Malaysian group of 104 tropical islands on the west coast of the country. It is the most visited part of the Langkawi islands and delivers white-sand beaches and thick jungles. Featuring a striking landscape, the island also plays host to an assortment of historic sites as well as several attractions. And it is made even more intriguing by its myths and legends. The name Langkawi combines the Malay words helang (eagle) and kawi (strong) hence the eagle is the symbol for the island.
Begin your journey with a visit to Atma Alam, a place to appreciate the delicate art of batik, done with a wax-resist dyeing technique.
Legend has it that Langkawi was cursed by a lady named Mahsuri who was innocently executed for adultery and before she died she cursed the island to be in doldrums for seven generations perhaps its true for Langkawi only blossomed not too long ago. You will visit Mahsuri's Mausoleum where her tombstone lies and watch a live gamelan performance and a video of her story.
Also see Kuah Town, once a fishing village and now the capital of Langkawi. Still charming, it also has a bustle of commerce at its port.
Last but not least, you will visit Gunung Machinchang, and have a chance to take the Langkawi Cable Car, where you will find stunning views of the island. Here you will see that there is more jungle than you might have imagined. Though the cable car takes 15 minutes each way, you will want to spend time at the top absorbing the scene.
