Overview

The transformation of Nagasaki since its inception makes it one of the most intriguing cities in all of Japan. From its start as a small fishing village to its growth into a major port in world trade it is amazing how its identity has been formed by Japanese culture and foreign influences. Considered to be one of Japan's most navigable cities a day spent in Nagasaki is one to remember. The roots in this area run deep with peace and perseverance, creating an aura hard to replicate at other destinations.

Nagasaki was the only city in Japan that was allowed to keep in contact with Chinese and Western merchants during Japan's isolation, which gave the town a unique feel. Today you can visit the mansions of former Western residents of Nagasaki in Glover Hill open air museum/garden. Our morning will begin with a visit here. Providing some of the best views in Japan this location was the site of former Scottish merchant Thomas Glover, an important figure in modern Japan's early industrial development.

The Glover Mansion is Japan's oldest Western-style house and is the perfect showcase of a Meiji-Era building. Another of Nagasaki's famous landmarks is Koshi-byo, one of the few shrines dedicated to the Chinese philosopher Confucius in Japan. This particular Confucius Shrine was built by Chinese residents of Nagasaki in 1893 and displays peculiar architecture.

Next we will visit Nagasaki's famed Chinatown. We recommend trying the delicious steamed buns and dumplings sold as street food! (Not included in tour cost).

Your tour will conclude with a moving visit to the Peace Memorial Park located near Ground Zero, the center of the atomic bomb drop on August 9, 1945. The focal point of the park can be seen in the 10 meter tall peace statue found at the north end of the park. The arms and the legs of the statue each have their own meaning. The right arm points to the threat of nuclear weapons, the left arm symbolizes eternal peace, the right leg stands for meditation and finally the flexed left leg represents standing up for the people in the world needing rescue. Still serving as a reminder, every year the Mayor of Nagasaki gives a speech in the park as call to world peace. Above the park stands the sobering Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum.
