Overview
Georgetown, named after King George III, is synonymous with history. Colonial buildings, Chinese shop-houses, and Little India makes the inner city of Georgetown easily one of the most interesting and charming cities in Asia. A heritage Jewel that is largely intact.
Visit the Thai Buddhist Temple (Wat Chayamangkalaram), which houses the 4th largest Reclining Buddha in the world measuring 108-ft long. Sitting across the road is The Dharmikarama Burmese Temple where you will see the famous Golden Reclining Buddha statue and be awed by the intricate architecture of both temples.
This is followed by another jewel of George Town: the Pinang Peranakan Mansion. The Peranakans, also known as the Babas and Nyonyas, were a prominent community of acculturated Chinese. Unique to this part of the world, especially in the Straits Settlements (Penang, Malacca, and Singapore) hence its other name, the Straits Chinese. Adopting selected ways of the local Malays and later, the colonial British, the Peranakans had created a unique lifestyle and customs which had not only left behind a rich legacy of antiques but its cultural influences like cuisine and language are still evident in Penang today. At the mansion, the typical home of a rich Baba of a century ago, is recreated to offer a glimpse of their opulent lifestyle and of their many customs and traditions. You will marvel at the painstaking restoration of this mansion and its unique antique furniture and woodwork.
Not to be missed is the majestic Khoo Kongsi. One of the most beautiful Chinese clan houses to be built outside of China, it comes with great historical and cultural values. Its walls, pillars, and roof are decorated with intricate carvings, statues, paintings, and colored tiles.
On your return journey, we will stop for a little retail therapy at a local products shop.
