Overview
The culture of hand-made crafts is fascinating, but in most locations, as generations die out, it is losing its audience as well as the talented people that have mastered these special products. Our expert and very personable guide will direct you to an area of the city where the last remaining businesses still fashion their wares by hand. This scene is becoming a rarity in Singapore and around the world. Along with the special crafts, you will witness an interesting hobby call Bird Singing, where you will find yourself serenaded by these special Song Birds.
The excursion is comprised of several stops, each of which will give you a window into the past life here. The first is right in the local heartlands where one of the largest Bird Singing corners is located. In this spot, birds actually get to practice their vocal chords and give you a chance to chat with the uncles, the owners who love their birds. Imagine the photographs and the stories you can return home with from just this one stop!
If you have ever watched Lion Dances, you will have noticed the incredibly colorful Lion Heads. One of the last remaining craftsmen who still makes these Lion Heads out of his home, will be your next stop. Sadly, it will not be long before the artist decides to stop creating the beautiful lion heads.
You will visit a business that makes an amazing array of paper offerings that are burnt for the Gods, Ancestors and Ghosts. Be amazed by the big robes, houses and colourful horses, all made of paper!
No doubt you will want to select some pieces as perfect souvenirs to take home. At the least, you will bring back an incredible understanding of the culture and talent of the Singaporeans.
You will then visit have lunch at a popular food centre, also known as Hawker Centres in Singapore. In Dec 2020, Singapore’s hawker culture has been added to UNESCOs list of intangible cultural heritage, so here is a chance for you to experience why it is has such a special place in the hearts of the locals.
