Pre/Post Cruise Jewish Heritage

Overview

The first Jewish community in Singapore arrived from Baghdad in the early 1800s, after Sir Stamford Raffles of Britain declared it a trading post in 1819. Shortly after, in 1824, England was given ownership of Singapore and the Jewish community grew even further and, by 1840, established a community that was and still is very vibrant and thriving. Your expert guide will take you through Jewish heritage landmarks and two beautiful synagogues that have been declared national monuments in Singapore.

The Maghain Aboth Synagogue was the first to be constructed and opened for services in 1878. One hundred years after its construction, celebrations were underway to mark a century of existence with an appearance by Singapore's first chief minister, David Marshall, arguably Singapore's best criminal lawyer and a key member of the community. Today, the synagogue continues to serve the entire community and remains a focal point of religious events.

Diversity within the Jewish community led to the creation of the Chesed-El synagogue in 1905. This was the second synagogue constructed by Sir Manasseh Meyer, a Jewish immigrant who rose to fortune within Singapore as a trader and real estate owner. He was even knighted in 1925!
