Even if you have not visited Cartagena before, you are most likely aware of the stellar restaurants and chefs in this city. The food is magnificent and each chef is trying to out do the other with their cuisine.
This excursion will take you to the heart of that authentic scene and is perfect if you like to go beyond the standard sights and dive into everyday life in magical Colombia. As in other locations that have a central market, you begin your morning with a visit to the Bazurto open-air market. It is located outside the old city just a short ride away.
Your walk through the market area will be led by a local guide who will talk about the traditional dishes and the ingredients from which they are derived. Fish is in great demand as part of the diet here and there are many found along the Colombian coastline. See them freshly presented as well as dishes that have already been created for local takeaway meals. Vegetables and fruits that look exotic are part of daily diets here and you will have a chance to taste some of them. Just listening to the locals doing business is a cultural lesson and there is much of that banter between the vendors and consumers. The market can be hot and crowded but along with local music, it does set the tone for the food to come.
From here, head to a private home in La Boquilla, a fishing village, where you will learn about typical daily dishes.
Your teacher is not a professional chef but a traditional cook who has learned the recipes handed down through the generations. The dishes you create and the meal itself will be delicious and representative of what most people commonly eat and have for years past. This experience is not one where you just mix together the ingredients. Instead, you will take part in the preparation of each facet of cooking.
A standard menu would include coconut rice, some local fried fish, green plantain frites, fresh salad, seafood such as shrimp, lobster, and or ceviche, and several accompaniments. Beverage is included when you sit down to dine.
In the end you will have experienced the marketplace, chopped your share of ingredients, and break bread with locals interested in learning about you as much as you are of them.
