But there is a wonderful ecosystem to explore. You will get a glimpse of Cartagena, old and new, as you head first to Fort of Saint Philip of Barajas for a panoramic drive-by view. It sits just outside the walled city and is considered the most outstanding feat of Spanish military engineering of the new world.
The Spanish began building the fort in 1536 and construction lasted for 121 years.
From this vantage point, you will see why it was so important to secure but you will also get a panoramic view of the city and the bay.
Your ride continues to the outskirts of the city. Your exploration of the tunnels is by canoe guided by a local. You can relax and take in the surroundings as you are poled through this diverse wealth and beauty of the natural landscape. The diverse ecosystem provides homes to a large variety of tropical birds, colorful fish and crustaceans.
You can expect to see some of the more unusual local birds such as the kingfisher, white heron, common laura, pink spatula, and pelicans that dominate this area. The mangroves provide the oxygen to continue the growth and flourishing of this area.
