Why people love this tour
People love getting a birds eye view of the Panama Canal. It's a splurge but highly worth it to understand how the canal was put together!
Overview
After much negotiation between the United States and Panama, the Canal project began to move forward in 1903 with the signing of the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty. The treaty provided for the purchase of the land by the US and gave the US control of operations. Construction on this massive undertaking began in 1904 with the canal opening to sea traffic in 1914. Panama took over control of the Canal in 1977, through which approximately 14,000 ships pass each year, including many of the larger Neopanamax vessels now able to transit the wider and deeper Expanded Canal.
As your helicopter takes to the air for your one hour exploration, you will fly from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea and observe the length of the Panama Canal with incredible aerial views of the East and West banks of Pacific Canal Locks. You'll get a birds-eye view of the Miraflores and Pedro Miguel, the Canals two original locks as well as the new Agua Clara locks which are part of the Panama Canal Expansion project that was finished in 2016.
You will fly over the Borinquen Dam, Centennial Bridge, Gaillard Cut, Gatun Lake, Gatun Dam, the Chagres River's mouth on the Caribbean side, the Spanish Fort San Lorenzo (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and Gatun Locks.
During the tour, your knowledgeable guide will provide historical insight and facts and statistics about this remarkable feat of engineering, construction, and manpower which has changed the economy of the Americas and the world.
Before landing back in Panama City, catch some impressive views of its skyline and the historical area, the Pacific Ocean entrance to the Panama Canal, and the Bridge of the Americas. Upon landing you will be transferred back to your hotel in Panama City.
