Overview
We'll travel 18 miles east of Nafplion, to Epidaurus... known for its stunning ancient theatre. Epidaurus was dedicated to the God of Medicine, Asklepios. The world-famous Theatre of Epidaurus, built in the 4th century BC, is a marvel of harmony and acoustics and the best-preserved ancient theatre in Greece. It is built out of limestone and seats a whopping 12,000 spectators!
Attending the performances of Ancient drama operating during the summer period is an unforgettable experience. Returning to Nafplion, well visit the fabulous Venetian fortress of Palamidi, commanding an impressive view over the Argolic Gulf, the city of Nafplion, and the surrounding country. Palamidi was an incredibly ambitious project- taking only 3 years to complete (1711-1714).
The fortress is very well preserved and an extremely impressive site in person! There are 857 steps in the winding stair from the town to the fortress and to reach the top of the fortress... over one thousand!
