Overview
Your morning starts with a ferry ride across the Darnelle Straits to the Gallipoli Peninsula. The straits have long been a strategic point of contention throughout history. During WWI the Brits and Anzac (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) troops fought the Turks who were allied with the Germans and Austria-Hungary. The Allies wanted control of the Straits in order to cut off the oil supply to their enemy. The Gallipoli campaign lasted 249 days. The death toll was huge. 86,000 Turkish forces and more than 160,000 Allied soldiers perished. The entire Gallipoli peninsula is a national park. Turkish and Allied soldiers are buried side by side in 31 war cemeteries. There are also several important monuments.
Cross back to Canakkale and enjoy lunch at the charming Tusan Hotel restaurant located on the Dardanelles.
After lunch, head to the ancient city of Troy. Due to the strategic location of Troy on the Dardanelles, there are nine civilizations built one on top of the other on this site. It was an active settlement from 3000 B.C. until the time of the birth of Christ. Troy has been excavated many times by archaeologists the most famous of which was Heinrich Schliemann who was searching for the treasure of Priam, the last King of Troy.
En route back to Canakkale you will stop to see one of the largest canons ever made, the Gazi Tabyasi. The Germans manufactured it and gave it to the Turks in WWI to shell the British ships going through the straits. Return to your ship after your tour.
