Why people love this tour

People love this tour as it combined the aspects of our two other popular helicopter experiences into one seamless tour.

3.5 hours (approx.) Small Group Tour Light

Overview

Your once-in-a-lifetime Alaskan adventure begins at the cruise ship pier, where you’ll meet your driver for a short, scenic transfer to the nearby helipad. Upon arrival, you’ll gear up and receive a thorough safety briefing to prepare for the unforgettable experience ahead.

From the Juneau Airport helipad, you’ll lift off on a breathtaking helicopter flight over the vast and rugged Juneau Icefield. Soar above glacier-carved peaks and dramatic ice formations as you make your way to a remote dogsledding camp perched high atop Herbert Glacier.

The 15 to 20-minute flight (each way, weather dependent) offers incredible views of the ever-changing landscape—each glacier with its own distinct personality. As the helicopter descends, the excited howls of Alaskan huskies welcome you to camp—eager and ready to run.

Once on the glacier, you'll have the chance to meet the mushers and hear their personal stories of racing through the Alaskan wilderness in events like the Iditarod. If you’re feeling adventurous, you’ll receive simple instructions on how to drive the sled—including how to brake and stop—before heading out.

Then it’s time to set off on an exhilarating loop across the snow. Along the way, you’ll be able to pause for photos and switch places with your companion if you’d like to try both mushing and riding. Your total time on the snow is approximately one unforgettable hour.

But the adventure doesn’t end there. Rather than heading straight back to Juneau, your helicopter will make a second landing on a lower section of the glacier. Here, you'll enjoy a guided 15-minute glacier walk—giving you a closer look at the surreal landscape of ice and stone. This combination of dogsledding and glacier exploration offers the best of both worlds—and the very best of Juneau.

Your journey concludes with a smooth flight back to the helipad, where your driver will be waiting to return you to the cruise ship pier—bringing your epic Alaskan experience to a perfect close.

Considerations

  • excluded The tour is limited mobility accessible, with advanced notice only. Please contact us at the time of booking if you require accessibility accommodations. There is an ADA lift available that can assist guests with getting in and out of the helicopter. If guests use the ADA lift, they will be required to stay inside the helicopter on the glacier. While on the glacier your pilot-guide will open the doors so guests can still take in the sights, sounds and smells.
  • excluded Service animals shall not be permitted on the aircraft used for this experience. Passenger seats in these aircraft are emergency exit accessible; the exit doors represent the only emergency exits. This policy is consistent with the Air Carrier Access Act that prohibits service animals to be located in an exit aisle.
  • excluded Children under the age of 12 are not permitted to fly without a guardian. Children pay the same rate as adults, regardless of age.
  • excluded There is a maximum of 6 guests per helicopter for this trip. If you have more than 6 guests in your group, please contact Venture Ashore.
  • excluded Heart patients: Please be aware that this flight reaches heights of up to 5000.
  • excluded The rates listed include surcharges for guests weighing between 260-299 pounds as well as those weighing over 300 pounds. If you purchase one of those weight categories and end up weighing under the specified threshold, you will not be refunded the difference in cost. Additionally, if you weigh in above the threshold of the category you purchased you will either be charged an additional cost or possibly even be denied boarding (with no refund).
  • excluded The combined maximum passenger weight for each helicopter is 1100 lbs. If you are booking for a larger party (3+ spaces) and your combined weights exceed the maximum weight - you will likely be split into different helicopters. Please keep in mind that this is a shared tour with a maximum of 6 people per helicopter, so if your party is 5 or less - we have to account for the other passengers already booked. Please contact Venture Ashore if you have any concerns or need additional information on this.

Special Instructions

  • excluded During the checkout process we will ask for your desired departure time. This tour has limited availability so we will attempt to get you as close as possible to your desired time. We will reference your cruise ships time in port before assigning a time to insure it works with your ships schedule.
  • excluded Total actual tour time is about 1 hour 50 minutes. Please allot 3.5 hours of your day to this activity which includes the time on tour as well as transportation to/from, safety briefing, etc.
  • excluded Dress warmly for the weather and dress in layers. Often the temperature on the glacier is colder than you expect. Sunglasses are recommended as the sun can reflect strongly off the snow.
  • excluded You will be outfitted with a glacier over-boot prior to embarking on your trip.
  • excluded Cell phones, cameras and binoculars are allowed on board, to capture wonderful memories on the day but no cases of any kind and no bags are allowed.
  • excluded Lockboxes are available to leave any items not allowed on the tour.
  • excluded There is no minimum fitness level required.
  • excluded All guests weights are required by the FAA. These weights should be gathered at the time of booking. Guests should be prepared to be weighed at the time of the tour. Weights are to be calculated including clothing, footwear, and cameras - all of which may add an additional 10-15 pounds.
  • excluded Your helicopter company has a no iPads or tablets policy on their tours. No camera sticks, tripods, or other extendible items are allowed on tour.
  • excluded No drones are allowed on your tour.
  • excluded Galaxy Note 7 will not be allowed on any of our flights.
  • excluded This tour runs from May 4th until August 31st, weather permitting.
