Overview
Join a small-group kayaking adventure across the scenic waters of Hilo Bay, guided by a local nature enthusiast who will share stories, history, and insight into Hawaii’s lush eastern coastline. As you paddle along the calm yet open waters of the bay, you’ll take in panoramic views of towering Mauna Kea, the dramatic Hamakua Coast, and the vibrant shoreline of historic Hilo Town.
Along the journey, you’ll visit Coconut Island, also known as Moku Ola, a culturally significant islet once believed to offer healing and restoration to Hawaiian warriors. Today, the island is a peaceful oceanfront park with grassy lawns, lava rock edges, and calm tide pools, all surrounded by stunning coastal scenery. From the water, you’ll enjoy a unique perspective of the island and nearby landmarks including the Queen Liliuokalani Japanese Gardens and Hilo’s tropical waterfront.
The clear shallows of the bay are home to colorful reef fish, sea urchins, and other marine life that can often be spotted beneath your kayak as you paddle along the volcanic coastline. With the backdrop of lush rainforest-covered hills and sweeping ocean views, this experience offers a memorable blend of adventure, culture, and natural beauty.
While Hilo Bay is partially protected, this excursion takes place in open coastal waters where wind, small swells, and changing weather conditions may affect the experience. Guests should be comfortable paddling for an extended period and prepared for a more adventurous ocean environment.
