Overview
Leave behind Auckland city as you pass through Titirangi, which translates to "Fringe of Heaven" in the local Maori language. Then enter the beautiful native rainforest that is the Waitakere Ranges, made famous by many movies that have been filmed here including the Oscar-winning movie, "The Piano." As we drive through lush subtropical rainforest, learn about the local flora and fauna that inhabit these ranges.
We will stop at the Arataki Visitor Centre, where in good weather we will see breathtaking views across part of the Waitakere Ranges, Auckland city, and the huge expanse of the Manukau Harbour. There are also several very interesting exhibits on display here, explaining what makes this area so special.
Our guide will then lead us on spectacular walking trails. Learn about both how amazing, and also fragile, this environment is and what we can all do to preserve it for future generations. See the magnificent Kauri trees, the world’s second largest tree by volume of wood. Equally famous are New Zealand's Pohutukawa trees, also referred to as NZ Christmas trees, which bloom in bright crimson-red colors around Christmas time. You will also see incredible volcanic black sand beaches as well as great viewpoints of the Tasman Sea, which separates New Zealand from Australia.
