Overview

Buenos Aires has been a haven for the Jewish people more than a few times in history. After the expulsion from Spain in 1492, Jews settled in Argentina. Argentina gained its independence from Spain in 1810, which brought about another wave of immigrants. Then, in the late 19th century, another wave of Jewish immigration fleeing poverty and pogroms in Russia, and other Eastern Europe countries, moved to Argentina because of its open door policy of immigration. Between 1906 and 1912, Jewish immigration increased at a rate of 13,000 immigrants per year.

The current history of the Jewish people in Argentina is one of inclusion as well as exclusion depending on the government policies at any particular time. In 1983 the first democratic president was elected in Argentina and since then, regardless of who was dictating law, the Jews have found Buenos Aires a comfortable home, willing to accept their talents.

Throughout Argentina’s history, Jews have held a large stake in the country’s fur, textile, chemical, electronics and auto industries. Both Banco Mercantile and Banco Comercial were founded by Jews. On the other hand, Jews are still absent from the high ranks of the military, foreign ministry and judiciary.

We will drive to the Once area, a neighborhood where most Jewish institutions are located like Hebraica JCC, synagogues, Jewish theatres and schools, as well as Rabbinical Seminaries. Then, drive through the Meashearim of Bam where the Jewish orthodox live.

Stop for a 1-hour tour at the site where the AMIA was bombed in 1994. The community center offers different programs for education, employment, culture, and arts. See the memorial dedicated to the 85 deceased during the bombing, the largest attack on Jews since World War II. Continue your tour to the Jewish Museum. Here, learn about Judaism in general, as well as the Argentine-Jewish culture and history.

Finally, enter the Libertad Synagogue. Founded in 1862, it was the first one in Argentina and was declared a Historical National Monument in 2000.

The AMIA offers shared 1-hour guided visits in English and in Spanish at 10:00am.

Travelers must bring their passports, otherwise they will not be allowed to enter AMIA.

The Jewish Museum is closed on weekends and Mondays. Opening hours are Tuesday to Thursday from 11:00am-5:30pm.

The synagogue is open on Friday at 7:30pm and on Saturday at 09:00am for services only.
