Overview
Manaus, the capital of the Brazilian State of Amazonas, is located on the northern bank of the Rio Negro. It is the gateway city to the largest tropical rain forest on the planet: The Amazon.
The Golden Age of Manaus was in the early 1900s, when, thanks to the exportation of natural rubber, it became one of the richest cities in the world. Hundreds of architects, city planners, and landscape designers came from Europe and transformed the city into a European-looking town known as "Little Paris of the Jungle."
After departing from the port, we'll drive by the Customs House, prefabricated in Liverpool, England, and shipped to Manaus more than a century ago. Walk through the Municipal Market and learn about the local fish, fruits and medicinal herbs. During your sightseeing tour, you'll also take in such city highlights as the clock tower known as Little Big Ben, the Cathedral, and the Provincial Palace--a building dating back to 1874 that now houses several museums, including the Museum of Numismatics, Museum of Image and Sound of Amazonas, Public Arty Galery, Museum of Archeology, and Museum Tiradentes. It also operates the Studio of Art Restoration and Paper Studio where you can see various visual artists in full action.
We'll stop for photos at the Palácio Rio Negro, the private residence of a German rubber baron and later the governor’s office. Lastly, we'll visit the inside of the lavish Opera House, built in the late 19th century with material imported from Europe.
