Overview
Half of the country's population lives in Montevideo. It is often thought of as the “little sister” to Buenos Aires. While both cities share similar cultures, delicious cuisine, intriguing history, and of course, the Rio de la Plata, Montevideo encapsulates a more tranquil, low-key vibe and is appealing to the younger folk. As you make your way through the city, particularly the Old Town, you will feel that sense of calm.
Your tour of Montevideo begins in the Old Town with a photo stop at the Independence Square at the center of which stands a monument dedicated to national hero, José Gervasio Artigas and his Mausoleum. Facing the square is the Government House (museum of the Presidents) and the amazing Solis Theater where Carlos Gardel used to tango in the past.
The main commercial street 18 de Julio is lined with shops, cafés and office buildings. You will then continue to the Legislative Palace (no inside visit included) for a photo stop. This huge building is the pride of Uruguay. It was constructed between 1908 and 1925 with local marble consisting of 52 colors and 12 types of wood. Then pay a visit to the Mercado Agricola a renovated old market hall that nowadays functions as a farmers’ market.
Gain an insight in the culinary customs of Uruguay and mingle with the locals here. Keep an eye out for the Battle y Ordoñez Park with its famous soccer stadium. Our next photo stop will be at Plaza Virgilio with the monument dedicated to the Fallen Soldiers of the Navy, and from which an excellent view of the city will offer a great spot for photographers. Return along the coast and its beaches back to the pier.
