A must-do for wildlife enthusiasts and penguin lovers alike, the journey to Punta Tombo Reserve is long but incredibly rewarding. Located roughly 100 miles south of Puerto Madryn, the scenic drive through Patagonia offers glimpses of the region’s vast, rugged landscapes and native wildlife.
Upon arrival, you’ll enter one of the largest Magellanic penguin colonies in the world. From mid-September to March, over one million Magellanic penguins migrate here to mate, nest, and raise their chicks. The reserve’s well-maintained boardwalks allow you to walk right among the penguins and their burrow-like nests, offering an intimate and respectful way to observe them in their natural habitat.
As you explore, you may spot:
Penguin couples guarding their nests or waddling to the sea for food
Protected seabirds, including three species of cormorants
Patagonian wildlife like guanacos, ñandúes (rheas), hares, and even seals along the coast
The penguins are remarkably accustomed to human presence, allowing for up-close encounters without disturbing their natural behavior. It’s a unique opportunity to witness this annual natural spectacle—thousands of penguins dotting the coastline, raising their young, and interacting in their bustling colony.

Please be advised that although the penguins are not fearful of humans, you should not approach them, as they can inflict bites serious enough to require stitches.

Tour requires walking over uneven, sand and gravel trails. The whole walking distance is approximately 2 miles, but penguins can be seen within the first few yards.
